![]() Why does Field Recording mode use only 2 channels? Why is podcast mode non-supported and how come I’m still in this mode once I tap OK under close? More importantly, why is ASMR! Sound ![]() They might be helpful for beginners but they only managed to confuse me. As far as I can tell these are of no use for field recording as you will always want to be in manual mode. There are several recording modes you can select from the launcher menu. This can become confusing, and having to record an extra stereo mix track drains the battery faster. The X8 records several mono or stereo tracks depending on how you set it up, but not multichannel files as I would expect. Speaking of which, you can’t record only individual tracks. If you aren’t aware of this, you might think the gain only goes up to 35, as there are Low and High input gain modes for some reason and the default is Low.Įvery time you turn the Portacapture X8 off and on again, all channels are armed even if you had previously disarmed some of them. For example, controlling limiters, phantom power and other features in Manual mode is done by tapping on a greyed-out microphone icon in the mixer screen. Some functions can be reached in multiple ways, while others are buried so deep within menus that I spent considerable time trying to find them. Many things are not explained at all and there’s no way to find out what they mean in the manual they include with the recorder. There’s an Exec button for some functions that just sounds weird. The way to move through menus varies, with the back button doing different things depending on circumstance. The User Interface and User Experience on this recorder are poor at best. This is not helped by long loading times when switching between modes or the fact that it takes more than 12 seconds to boot up the unit. I agree this is not the central feature of an audio recorder, but it’s a letdown nevertheless. Nowadays it’s difficult to use poor quality screens when everyone has a great touch screen in their pocket at all times. Adding to the low refresh rate and slow response, the sliding animations make it feel like one of those first generation in-car navigation systems that took ages to move through menus. Sadly the screen is too reflective, has heavy backlight bleed in one corner and it’s not really that responsive. But there’s a nice large touch screen that makes physical buttons redundant, right? ![]() There are so many things that could be controlled with it, and I would have liked to see it work as a joystick too. The big rotary knob at the bottom looks great but gets very limited use. There are only a handful of buttons but that’s not a huge issue as most functions can be controlled through the touchscreen. The position of the 4 XLR inputs on the sides of the recorder isn’t my favourite for this form factor, but it’s a good compromise and makes sense. Unlike on the Sony PCM D100, there are no protective bars around them so you can easily smash or break them if you aren’t careful. They’re difficult to protect from wind or bumps because they protrude so much outwards. It seems like they were designed by a different team and only as an afterthought with limited budget. The way they screw into the slots at the top is in stark contrast to the elegant design of the rest of the unit. They’re made of very light plastic and they just feel cheap. The detachable microphones are a different story. The dark grey looks good and isn’t too reflective even in strong daylight. ![]() It’s made of solid plastic and there are no rattles when it’s shaken or handheld. The X8 seems built well and feels good in the hand.

When you're drowning, you just want that life raft, right? You just want the thing that's just gonna make you feel better immediately, and that's what faux self-care is. ![]() Why do you think faux self-care is so appealing? And then I stopped doing them, because I realized I was so mean to myself during the classes that I thought it was making me better, but it was also just making me feel really bad about myself. You just reminded me there were a few years where I was obsessed with spin classes. It's not that escape is bad, but it's an escape so that you can get away from all of the terribleness that's going on, or sometimes it can end up being something that actually gets turned into an achievement metric. And it usually maintains the status quo in your relationships or in your family life or in your workplace, and it doesn't actually do anything to change any of these larger systems.Īnd usually, especially for women and for people of color, it's an escape. It's something to buy or something to do. It's usually a noun, so it's usually describing some sort of activity or a product. It's always gonna be something that's prescribed from the outside. So I'm curious how you would define "faux" self-care? So the meditation apps, the bubble baths, the sensory deprivation tanks – all that stuff is sold to us as the solution, but it doesn't actually fix any of the real external problems that have caused us to feel so terrible to begin with, whether we're talking about white supremacy, whether we're talking about, you know, toxic capitalism, patriarchy, right? Or the fact that if you're a Black woman, you have to work for 19 months to make the same amount of money that a White man will make in 12 months. Buying a new day planner and signing up for a meditation class isn't gonna change the fact that 30 million Americans are uninsured and that a quarter of American workers don't have paid sick days. ![]() In your book, you're making the argument that none of that is actually self-care? But nothing was working and I was still really stressed. I have a section on my phone that's called "Calm Down Sis," and it includes all of the calming apps. So I tried everything: meditating, breath work, edibles. I was stressed with work, with the news, with life, and a lot of people told me I needed to prioritize self-care. Parker: So, in 2020-2021, I – like the rest of the world – was going through a rough patch. Lakshmin: What is "real" self-care? What is "faux" self-care? And why are those distinctions especially important for women of color?ī.A. ![]() On the latest episode of Code Switch, I ask Dr. But the definitions of self-care they had been sold weren't real solutions to their problems because, as she told me, "You can't meditate your way out of a 40-hour work week with no childcare, without health insurance, without access to actual, real, systemic support that is going to take care of the fact that our world is pretty much constantly on fire." In her practice, she says, her patients bring up the idea of self-care a lot. Lakshmin is a psychiatrist who specializes in women's mental health. That was before reading Real Self-Care: Bubble Baths, Cleanses and Crystals Not Included. In other words, it's my form of self-care. It's not just about getting my "energy cleansed." It's also about ignoring my neighbor's toddler stomping on the floor above me, or the police sirens outside my window, or the back-to-back meetings I sometimes have for hours on end. But with all of the madness in the world, that half-hour virtual session feels nice. ![]() This is probably related to ESD, and during the con rework of failed badges was basically impossible because of drunk soldering in a dimly lit hotel room. Failure modes during the con were probably related to spilling a drink on a badge, although there was a rash of failed CPUs. That’s an amazing yield for any independent hardware badge, and is honestly one of the most impressive aspects of this year’s Queercon. When the badges came back from the fab house, the failure rate for this year’s Queercon badge was 0.7%. The full write up is available here, with the solution somewhat related to a cube of badges. Elements derived from the coffee element required a Starbucks sponsor badge.Īs we all expect from a DEF CON badge, there was a crypto challenge and contest. Starbucks was responsible for sponsoring a portion of Queercon this year, so ten special badges were loaded up with a fifth element: coffee. Think of it as crafting in Minecraft, but with badges. Combining these elements leads to even more elements - water plus fire equals beer, for example. Every badge comes loaded with a set of basic elements (air, fire, water, earth), represented as pixel art on the 7×7 RGB LED matrix. The UI/UX/graphics designer came up with a game loosely based on a game called ‘Alchemy’. A GameĪ badge wouldn’t be complete without a game, and the Queercon badge has it in spades. If anyone likes this idea of interconnected badges, I would like to personally suggest equilateral triangles - this would allow for icosahedrons or hexagon-based solids. It took a bit of cajoling from the badgemakers to get people to assemble a cube, and no other weird shapes were constructed out of multiple badges. The range of motion on this connector allows for 180 degrees of rotation, but surprisingly most Queercon badge holders only assembled single planes of badges. When one badge is plugged into the other, they mate producing a ‘fabric’ of glowing badges. This year the badge uses a strange universal connector mounted along the four sides of the badge. The Queercon badge always has a bit of interconnectedness built in, and this year is no exception. Although the LED driver is able to address all 219, and even though the badge is powered by a 32-bit ARM Cortex M3 microcontroller, this is pretty much the limit of how many LEDs can be controlled with this setup. ![]() There are 73 LEDs in total, all driven by the same TI LED driver used in previous years, combined with two shift registers and 15 FETs to control the LED commons. Instead of going with WS2812s or APA101s, the Queercon badge team found simple, 0604 RGB LEDs, priced at about $0.026 a piece. The killer feature for this badge is a vast array of RGB LEDs. If you have five friends, you can make something that looks like the Companion Cube from Portal. The two obvious features of this badge are an incredible number of tiny RGB LEDs, and very strange hermaphroditic edge connectors, allowing these badges to be plugged together into a panel of badges or a cube. ![]() In the end, the QC badge team decided on a ‘failsafe’ design - it wasn’t necessarily going to be the best idea, but the design would minimize risk and development time. Last year’s Blooper squid/cuttlefish badge is a high point in the world of functional PCB art, and by January of this year, the team didn’t know where to take badgecraft next. The development of the 2017 Queercon badge had a really tough act to follow. The folks behind the Queercon badge just wrote up their postmortem on the badge, and it’s an excellent example of how to push PCBs into the space of human interaction. This year’s Queercon badge was equally as amazing, quite literally pushing badgecraft into another dimension. Last year, we took a look at an immaculate squid/cuttlefish badge, and a few years before that, the Queercon badge was a beautiful 3.5″ floppy embedded with far too many RGB LEDs. The Queercon badge is always a work of art, and this year is no exception. One of the largest groups measured by the number of rideable, inflatable unicorns is Queercon, a ‘conference within a conference’ dedicated to LGBT causes, a rager of a party, and a killer conference badge. DEF CON is more of a collection of groups hosting villages, get-togethers, meetups, and parties where like-minded individuals share their time, company, electronic war stories, and whiskey. ![]() At this point, it’s not really correct to describe DEF CON as a single, gigantic conference for security, tech, and other ‘hacky’ activities. ![]() If you ever need any help with a game, our Zylom support team is at your service, in your own language. to play games on Windows Vista, We take a look at some game experiences that.
